Mike and Angelo S12E3 (2000) - FULL EPISODE

Taking the Plunge. An old foe shows up at the house having jilted his wife-to-be at the altar. Did I mention that he looks just like Angelo? He looks just like Angelo. How will Katy calm down non-bride Tiara Thickerton-Plank, and will Mike be able to tell the difference between his best friend and this beastly impostor? This episode was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 18th January, 2000. The first thing to make clear is that the character of Freddy - played, obviously, by Tim Whitnall, even if he doesn't get a credit for it - previously showed up in series 10, and is the posh nephew of stuck-up neighbour Daphne Fawkes-Bentley (who sadly doesn't appear in this one). There's some good Looney Tunes type of doppelganger confusion to be had, and I love how they stick to the convention of the baddie's distinguishing feature being just a little bit of facial hair. The subplot about the fast-growing yucca plant is a slightly odd one, but there's no doubt that Angelo's opening musical number is a real series highlight. Cricklewood gets the Hollywood treatment via Broadway! Vaguely reminiscent of Anchors Aweigh, what with the life-on-an-ocean-wave theme early on. This is an all-round very funny episode, though it's a bit of a surprise that Mike also falls for the ruse, as usually the young person in this sort of situation has no problem telling the identical goodies and baddies apart. Top marks for the Wagga Wagga joke, though, the "Naughty Lass" pun, and Angelo's solution to springing a leak. The guest star, meanwhile, is Pippa Haywood, who's still a regular on our screens in the likes of the Porridge reboot and Bodyguard. This episode came slap bang between possibly her two most famous credits: The Brittas Empire and Green Wing. Many thanks to Lee for providing this recording.
