Mike and Angelo S3E11 (1991) - FULL EPISODE
From series: Mike And Angelo (Full Episodes)
Mother Finds Out. Rita and Mike are off camping, leaving Angelo home alone with Rita's mother, Nancy. How will she react when she catches him walking around on the ceiling? More to the point, can they prevent the secret from going any further, particularly in the direction of committed nosey parker Mr Pinner? This episode was originally broadcast on Wednesday, 30th January, 1991
Quite a few unusual things about this one. Firstly, Mike's largely absent. Who says you can't have a kids' sitcom with no kids in it, though? It feels a bit like a Pinner and Mother spin-off at times, but still works just fine for Children's ITV. The second unusual thing is how careless Angelo is in getting caught out, not to mention his subsequent candour in coming clean. And, thirdly, did we know that Angelo can communicate with plants? That he sleeps floating in mid-air? Or that he has that *other* power that is revealed towards the end? I'm surprised we didn't see more of these in other plots down the years.
All the tricks in the book are exploited to deliver the special effects used in this one, including the Lionel Ritchie rotating room. Some of the chromakey shots are very clever, but haven't aged well in these days of CGI - though not quite as badly as that burst of background music that sounds like Sinitta's version of Right Back Where We Started From. That and Ghostbusters - the sequel film having been released in the UK the previous year - in the same episode! What an age we lived in. (And I don't mean that quite as sarcastically as it reads, either.)
Mr Pinner's at his annoying best, and manages to tread the fine line between Looney Tunes and Fawlty Towers in his efforts to obtain evidence of Angelo's alien status, what with his bugging, photographing, ladder-climbing, videoing, breaking and entering... It's just dawned on me that he's very much the ARP warden of this series. Another nice touch I liked is that, of course, it's raining where Mike and Rita are camping. For our younger viewers, that's a phone box they're standing in. And as for what Nancy means when she says she'll go see if the milk has "arrived", well, ask your parents.
