Mike and Angelo S6E10 (1994) - FULL EPISODE

A Wonderful Wife. Mike's mum and dad are back from their travels thanks to a new job offer - but a misunderstanding leaves Patti wishing that she'd never married Barney in the first place. Meanwhile, Mr Pinner is arrested for armed robbery. This episode, the last in the series, was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 26th April, 1994. You've heard of a game of two halves, but this is very much a story in that mould. Everything starts out happy happy happy, fun fun fun, and you naturally assume that this is just another regular episode - and then out of nowhere we get smashed in the face by the massively heavy theme of divorce, a dystopian future, and a heap of gloomy what-ifs. I'm sure you've worked out from the title that the inspiration is the Frank Capra film It's a Wonderful Life, and as a very nice in-joke for long-time fans of the show, of course Angelo plays the part of a guardian angel, as was part of the original ambiguous premise of the show. Favourite bits: the mis-hearing that you instantly suspect is a mis-hearing, but isn't obvious enough to work out for yourself; Alexandra Milman looking like *that*; and I'm going to have to try to work the "fan yourself with a mackerel" line into everyday conversation. Also, the more I see of Tim Whitnall's performances, the more I'm convinced that he's just a supremely all-round talented bloke. He's ace in this and as always hits the right tone just perfectly. Incidentally, I can't say for certain, but does anyone get the feeling from the nicely-tied-up ending that they weren't exactly certain whether Michael Benz was to return or not? Or, perhaps, that they didn't even know whether they'd get another series at all? Of course, history tells us we were only halfway through the run, but in other ways it was indeed very much the end of an era: this is the last we ever saw of every single character herein with the exception of Mike and Angelo themselves. Yes, Mr Pinner and Mel, Patti and Barney, and even Rita (who'd been there from the start) weren't to come back after this one. No continuity, but listen out for the awkward double ending to the closing theme tune that I think is unique to this series and inexplicably changes slightly every time.
