Beat It, Kid. Mike's determined to find reasons to spend some time with Samantha, and her band looking for somewhere to rehearse seems to offer the perfect excuse. But is everything really as it seems, or is he getting the wrong kind of attention for all the wrong reasons? This episode was originally broadcast on Thursday, 19th January, 1995. Katy is excellent in this one, showing that she is responsible, knows what's what, and ultimately really cares - even if she can get hilariously irrationally angry at the drop of a hat. Mike's moments of reflection with Angelo are quite touching, too, and the theme of people being used and how that feels is put across very cleverly. It's funny to see Mike hitting the age at which he just can't say no to a flirtatious girl, while the mere image of someone sawing a dustbin in half is something to behold indeed. All round, a very good episode, with the caveat that the song is nowhere near as bad as it was supposed to be. And by that I mean that in my opinion even the drum-less version has a fair bit of potential, in a raw Britpoppy sort of way. How's that for a bizarre criticism? Of the guest stars, Rebecca Weeks is brilliantly devious as Kelly, while Richard Janes is believably selfish and uncaring. Rebecca seems to have just re-entered the acting profession after taking a decade or so out, but I can't find anything super-recent about her. Perhaps her most impressive credit to date is for The Ghost of Greville Lodge back in 2000. Richard, meanwhile, has mostly turned his hand to producing and directing and boasts a student RTS Award nomination. I'm still hoping someone out there can update us on Katie Pearson (Sam), because I haven't managed to find much at all on her. Many thanks to Grant for providing this recording.
