Homeward Bound. Mike's mother Patti returns from her business trip unexpectedly early, and she's ready to take her son back across the Atlantic. He hasn't even started packing yet, and, frankly, doesn't want to leave. Will Angelo's new invention solve the problem and help ease tensions? This episode was originally broadcast on Thursday, 11th March, 1993. I really like how this one works on two levels. For the youngsters watching, this was all about Mike, what he wants, and how he feels about Melanie and the situation in general. It's very telling how he pours out his heart to Angelo rather than either his mum or his aunt. And that's the other level I'm talking about: the real story, in many ways, is much more about the warring adult sisters and the obvious decades-old baggage they're still carrying. You can sense the barely-concealed rivalry most of the way through, but in the end it's defused by a common goal and they regain their perspective. Despite all the emotion, there are loads of very funny moments in this episode. Angelo's transporter going wrong and lumbering Mike in various locations, the running joke of the clock, the phone call home (which wouldn't work these days thanks to mobiles), the closing punchline which leaves them all in trouble... Being the final episode of the series, everything is sort of wrapped up in a way that meant if they made more, they could carry on without a problem, but if the plug was pulled or certain actors didn't return, all the characters were happy enough for this to be considered a "happily ever after". Always a balancing act, but they struck it well. Nice to see so many other locations, too! Huge thanks to Lee for providing this recording.
