Brett's Lucky Day. A mysterious little rock from another dimension beyond infinity finds its way through the wardrobe, and Angelo fashions it into a necklace of sorts. Soon, everyone who wears it experiences a change in fortune - sometimes for the better, sometimes not. Meanwhile, Rita's old friend and colleague Brett braves a visit to the house for the first time in ages. This episode was originally broadcast on Thursday, 25th February, 1993. This is the final guest appearance on the show for Gavin Richards, and my goodness does he make the most of it. The character was always steeped in greed and gaining unfair advantages, so it's funny that Angelo's so over-the-top keen to see him again, and extra funny that Brett is so trepidatious. Highly understandable, of course. My favourite bit has to be him laying it on so thick with his tale of woe, culminating in the tragic story of Bobby the Budgie's sad demise. But there's also a really good gag towards the end, when Rita assumes Brett's asking her out on a date. I didn't see that one coming at all. It's interesting to note what each individual character counts as 'good luck' (if it's not looking too deep to do so). Winning a competition, fixing a strimmer, getting away with having broken something... and striking it rich at the local casino. I like the way Mike is the first to spot the pattern of what's going on, and Angelo's subsequent practical demonstration of what could happen is well done. The 'too much of a good thing' speech makes it all sound rather philosophical, but the way everything is tied up at the end is a good reminder of why we love the show so much. Really good episode.
