Antics Roadshow. A spate of burglaries have taken their toll on the area, and things really come to a head when neighbour Daphne Fawkes-Bentley has her unbelievably valuable Ming vase stolen. Ever willing and determined to fight injustice, Angelo resolves to be the detective who gets to the bottom of the mystery. This episode was originally broadcast on Thursday, 6th February, 1997. I'm sure I've no need to tell you that Daphne is of course played by T-Bag herself, Elizabeth Estensen - and wonderfully engaging she is, too (especially in the early scene). Her tangle with the security device plays against her posh and proper character brilliantly, the anecdote about the vase is sold perfectly, and the "No, Barry Manilow" line is eye-rollingly funny. But I think it's fair to say that Angelo's stint and the private eye also adds weight to the episode, and I got a good chuckle out of his "Basildon" line, for some reason. Maybe it's just me, but I found it amazing just how tense everything feels when the vase eventually turns up. You just know with 100% certainty that it's going to be smashed (I don't think I'm spoiling anything when I tell you that), and all the near-misses and teases absolutely tied me in knots. The solution and eventual pay-off is wonderfully silly and very cleverly worked out, though. Stay tuned for a microscopic clip of Children's ITV continuity at the end.
